Swedish Meatballs

Serves: 4

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely grated
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp butter, for frying

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and white pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs:

  1. In a large bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add grated onion, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, pepper, and ground meat. Mix with hands just until combined.
  3. Form mixture into small, 1-inch meatballs.

Cook the Meatballs:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
  2. Working in batches, cook meatballs until browned on all sides and cooked through (8-10 minutes). Remove and set aside.

Make the Sauce:

  1. In same skillet, melt 3 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute until golden.
  2. Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth. Simmer until thickened.
  3. Stir in heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce. Season to taste.

Combine and Serve:

  1. Return meatballs to skillet and simmer in sauce for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
